So, it is now 40 years since the internet was initially used. Who could have believed, at that time, how big it would become in such a relatively short period?

I recall, as a small child, thinking how fortunate were such people as Alexander Graham Bell, being able to invent the telephone. Others had invented wireless, tv, cinecamera. What was there remaining for such as my generation to think of? It is lucky others had more vision than I did. We now benefit from DVDs, mobile telephones, digital cameras and many other wonderful items which I could not have dreamed about as a child.

On the 40th anniversary of the internet, it is interesting to see the differences we have seen in the use of computers over this period. In the early years, there was no world wide web, so the internet was not the same as we think of in 2009 when we say we use it.

Not all companies had access to computers 40 years ago, let alone people having many PCs in their homes. Even as late as the 1990’s the company where I was employed had just one computer which would connect to the internet and everyone who worked for the company had to rely on this in order to connect with the internet.
